New £95m Travelodge opens in the City of London

Not so long ago, budget hotels were more likely to be found close to industrial estates or motorway services. Not anymore, the budget hotel chains are going head to head with the establishment to compete for business and city centre tourist business.

Nothing demonstrates this more than Travelodge’s new opening in the City. London City Travelodge on Middlesex Street (more famously known as Petticoat Lane) is close to Liverpool Street Station. Costing nearly £100 million to build it will have nearly 400 rooms.

Competing for Business

For this new flagship hotel, there is a new concept, “Travelodge Plus”. Complementing the standard rooms, for which there is a new format and decor design, the hotel will have 142 rooms aimed at the business user. These SuperRooms will features coffee makers, power showers and importantly for the business user, larger desks with USB points. There is even an iron and ironing board to prepare you for the meeting.

A new Cafe Bar concept will offer working and meeting areas, claimed to offer more than standard fare in budget hotels.

With travel budgets under constant scrutiny, this looks to be a good strategy for Travelodge, the UK’s third biggest operator by room count. A comfortable clean, quiet and welcoming room, is all many business users want. On my many business trips there was rarely time to use other facilities.
