Motorway Services – Good and Not So Good

Transport Focus for the second year have surveyed users of our 111 Motorway Services on behalf of the operators (MSA) Click to see their report

Overall Positive

92% of us are apparently satisfied, up from 90% in 2017. 62% are very satisfied, the figures drop a bit for professional drivers, 88% are satisfied, up from 84% last year. The scores drop, when the survey looks at value for money. For food, drinks and particularly fuel, the score drops to 66%.

The MSA operators have upped their game considerably from the dismal state of affairs only a few decades ago. Bringing in High Street names such as M and S, Waitrose and Costa has certainly made a difference. Facilities whilst not always like new, are generally clean and cared for according to the survey.

Some Interesting Stats

  • 45% of us decide on an MSA before they travel
  • 73% use the toilets
  • 52% sit down with food or drink they buy
  • 25% feel relaxed after a stop
  • 66% say they will use the same services again

Good and Not So Good

Roadchef’s Norton Canes MSA on the M6 Toll in Staffordshire scored 100%. Stafford Services on the M6 came second a massive improvement from their 2017 score of 70%. Small operator Westmoreland’s Tebay South(6) and North (9) both made it into the top ten.

The bottom players yield no surprises, Thurrock on the M25 a lowly 68% and Toddington South on the M1 with 72%.
